Key point: SPSS showing 0.000 does not mean the probability is zero.
SPSS may display a significance value of 0.000, but researchers should not report p equals zero. Learn the correct reporting format and interpretation.
What the display means
SPSS commonly rounds values to three decimal places. A displayed value of 0.000 therefore means the calculated probability is smaller than the displayed precision, not that it is exactly zero.
How to report it
Report the result as p less than 0.001 rather than p equals 0.000. Include the test statistic, degrees of freedom where relevant, sample size and an appropriate effect size or confidence interval.
What the p value cannot tell you
A small p value does not show that an effect is large, important or causal. The meaning depends on the research design, estimate, uncertainty, assumptions and practical context.
A responsible reporting sentence
State the statistical result accurately, then explain the direction and magnitude of the finding. Avoid words such as proves or causes when the design supports only an association.
