Key point: A code is not automatically a theme.
Learn the difference between codes, categories and themes and how to move from interview data to a defensible qualitative interpretation.
Codes identify meaningful features
A code is a concise label applied to a relevant segment of data. Good codes remain connected to the research question while preserving enough context to understand what the participant meant.
Categories organise related codes
Categories bring related codes together. They help the researcher see recurring topics, processes or conditions, but they may still be descriptive rather than fully analytical.
Themes explain patterned meaning
A theme should communicate a coherent and important pattern that helps answer the research question. It is more than a topic heading. A strong theme explains what is happening and why the pattern matters.
Maintain an audit trail
Record how codes were developed, combined, revised or rejected. Keep examples of supporting and contradictory evidence. This makes the analytical process more transparent and defensible.
