Key point: A limitation should clarify the evidence, not apologise for the study.
Use a four part structure to explain research limitations, mitigation and the boundaries of your conclusions without writing an apology.
Name the exact constraint
Avoid vague statements such as time and finance were limitations. Explain the specific design, sampling, measurement or data constraint and identify the part of the study it may affect.
Explain the likely consequence
Show whether the limitation may affect measurement accuracy, transferability, generalisability, causal interpretation or another aspect of the evidence.
Describe mitigation honestly
State the reasonable steps taken to reduce the effect, such as pilot testing, triangulation, sensitivity analysis, transparent inclusion criteria or careful contextual description.
Limit the claim
End by explaining what readers should not conclude. A transparent limitation often strengthens a study because it demonstrates that the researcher understands the boundaries of the evidence.
